Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on Thursday suggested that the country would seek to take in Hong Kong residents who employed in the financial sector and other specialized fields. “We have been welcoming foreign talent with specialized and technical abilities,” said Abe.

“It is important for Tokyo to remain an attractive place of business for the finance industry, and to continue developing as an international city that brings together people, information and money from around the world.”  “In order to become a financial center, we need to bring in more talent,” said Abe.

Abe said the coronavirus outbreak has spotlighted many issues linked to Japan’s future role in the international community. On the other hand, Japan wants to “take the lead” in a Group of Seven statement on Hong Kong. “We acknowledge G7 has a mission to lead the global public opinion, and Japan wants to take a lead in issuing a statement based on ‘one nation, two systems’ in Hong Kong,” said Abe on Wednesday.
