According to the report of the Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO), the oversea Resident’s visits to Japan were 193,700 visits in March. It was about 93% less than last year. The pandemic COVID-19 situation was getting serious in the past 2 months and had a dramatic impact on the number of international arrivals in Japan. The rate of decline was much higher than the time of SARS(2003), the financial crisis in 2008, and the Great East Japan Earthquake(2011). On the other hand, the number of Japanese resident visits abroad was 272,697 in March, which was about 85.9% less than last year.

The number of international travelers to Japan declined compared to the previous year. From the time when the restriction on entry went into effect in early March, China(-87.9%), Taiwan(-44.9%), South Korea(-97.1%), Hong Kong(-94.2%), declined sharply 98.5% compared to the previous year.
